Simply do it.

If it is the right thing to do, simply do it. You don’t have to take a selfie and post about it. You don’t have to tell everyone what you did. Simply do it.

As a leader if you go out in the field or out on the floor to work with your people so you can better relate to their challenges and communicate with them ,then simply do it. You don’t have to take a selfie and post about it. You don’t have to tell everyone what you did. Simply do it.

If you work night shift alongside your people so you can relate to and connect with the people who always work when you are sleeping, then simply do it. You don’t have to take a selfie and post about it. You don’t have to tell everyone what you did. Simply do it.

If you show up to help your people with the Christmas backlog, then simply do it. Roll up your sleeves and get to work. You don’t have to take a selfie and post about it. You don’t have to tell everyone what you did. Simply do it.

Taking selfies that you can post on LinkedIn, or Facebook to show that you are a “leader” comes across as disingenuous and being about you. As a leader it is not about you. It should be about the people that you have the privilege to lead, coach and mentor. If you want to post about something, post about your people. Share stories about the great work they are doing. Share stories about how they and making an impact. Share stories about their acts of service and the examples of how they continually go over and above. If you are going to share photos, then share photos of them, without you being in the photo.

Leadership is about investing in your people, training your people, giving them the authority to identify and solve problems, providing them with guidelines and guardrails, trusting them to do what they are trained to do, supporting them, caring about them, and continually developing them. None of that involves taking and posting selfies of you doing what you should do as a leader.

Remember that leadership is a choice and a journey, and it starts with you. Choose well, keep learning, and enjoy the journey.
