Leadership is about service. Leadership is about purpose and a commitment to something bigger than yourself. Leadership is about dedication. Leadership is about sacrifice. Leadership is about perseverance and determination.
So, it is appropriate that today, November 11, Remembrance Day in Canada and Veterans Day in the U.S. that we remember and honour the men and women who have served in the military in our countries. We need to remember and honour them, and their families, for their service, their sacrifice, their leadership, their determination, their perseverance and their dedication to a purpose and a mission greater than themselves.
Few people in society will step up to serve in the military and in public safety. We need to acknowledge and honour those who do. We also need to honour their families who are also serving and sacrificing for their dedication and commitment.
I know that you do not like to be called Heroes. The ancient Greeks however, believed that everyone had it within them to be a Hero. They believed a Hero was a protector; someone willing to protect not just themselves, but to protect others. They believed Heroes possessed three core traits: Compassion, Love and a Commitment to Something Bigger Than Themselves. I see and appreciate those traits in you.
To all the Heroes who have served and are serving thank you for your willingness to step up and be willing to Dare to Be Great. For those who paid for that service with their lives we remember you and honour you. For the families left behind we remember you and honour you. Thank you.
Remember that leadership is a choice and a journey and it starts with you. Choose well, keep learning and enjoy the journey.
