Be the leader your people want and deserve.

If you want to retain people then lead them, invest in them, develop them, support them, care about them, trust them, give them ongoing meaningful feedback, give them the authority to make decisions and solve problems, and provide top cover for them.

If you want to recruit good people to your team then turn your current team members into a walking, talking billboard and recruitment team by leading them, investing in them, developing them, supporting them, trusting them, giving them ongoing meaningful feedback, giving them the authority to make decisions and solve problems, and providing top cover for them.

If you want to prevent burnout in your people then lead them, invest in them, develop them, support them, care about them, trust them, give them ongoing meaningful feedback, give them the authority to make decisions and solve problems, and provide top cover for them.

People generally don’t leave companies; they leave bad bosses.

People will work for less money if they have a leader who makes them feel valued, feel a sense of belonging, and feel like they are contributing to something bigger than themselves.

People want to work for a leader who believes in them, invests in them, develops them, cares about them, trusts them, and values their opinion and contributions. They want a leader who will establish expectations and create a culture where everyone, including the leader, accepts responsibility and invites accountability. They want a leader who will stand up and own up when her or she screws up. They want to work for a leader who creates a culture where it is safe to ask questions and challenge assumptions.

People want a leader, not a boss.

Be the leader your people want and deserve.

Remember that leadership is a choice and a journey, and it starts with you. Choose well, keep learning, and enjoy the journey.
